Whitney Houston's Wedding Dress, Driver's License, Passport & Emmy Award Are to be Auctioned Off
More than four years ago, music icon Whitney Houston passed away. Now, her estate has been levied with a heavy tax. In an attempt to pay off the money owed to the IRS, her estate will auction off personal items belonging to the singer and actress,. This includes her 1986 Emmy for her performance at the 28th Annual Grammy Awards, which is estimated to sell for $10,000.
Heritage Auctions, the Beverly Hills, California-based auction house, said that more than 100 pieces of Houston memorabilia will be sold in the two-day auction on June 24th and 25th. This includes her California State's Driver's License, her first passport which she used to launch her first International tour, her wedding dress, and many other items.
"We felt that it was time to give something of Whitney to the people who loved her and her music and, conversely, who Whitney loved back with all of her heart and soul," Pat Houston, the singer's former manager and president of the Whitney Houston Estate, said in a statement.
Nevertheless, some fans have not been happy that the Estate is not cherishing Houston's hard earned assets. They have even formulated a petition to the Estate not to carry out the auction:
Houston was one of pop music's best-selling music artists of all-time, with an estimated 170-200 million records sold worldwide. She released six studio albums, one holiday album and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification. Houston's crossover appeal on the popular music charts, as well as her prominence on MTV, starting with her video for "How Will I Know", influenced several African American women artists who follow in her footsteps
Houston also made her mark in Gospel music. Her soundtrack to the movie "The Preacher's Wife" is the best-selling gospel soundtrack album of all time, and has sold an estimated 6 million copies worldwide. The lead single, "I Believe in You and Me" (a cover of The Four Tops classic), became a top five hit in the U.S. and was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 40th Grammy Awards, as well as for Best R&B Album.
