Yancy Reflects on Her Recent Dove Award Win, New Christmas Single, and Podcast
Dove Awards-winning worship leader, songwriter, author and producer of hundreds of songs sung around the world that make Jesus loud, Yancy takes home a 55th Annual GMA Dove Award for Children's Recorded Song of the Year for her cover of "Holy Forever." Produced by Stephen Leiweke and distributed by Syntax Creative, the song is available at digital and streaming outlets everywhere via https://sc.lnk.to/R1UNDk.
Yancy's worship rendition of the song was inspired by Chris Tomlin's recording of "Holy Forever," which was written by Tomlin, Brian Johnson, Jenn Johnson, Jason Ingram and Phil Wickham, and garnered the writers the 2024 GMA Dove Award for Song of Year.
Q: Yancy, thank you for doing this interview with us. Congratulations on winning a GMA Dove Music Award for "Holy Forever." How do you feel about this win?
Thank you so much Timothy for hanging out. I'm grateful. So, so grateful. I've been making music for the last 27 years so getting an honor like a Dove from my peers is a true gift. I'm an independent artist and so it's rare for an indie to win. I want to highlight to all the indie artists, writers and producers out there. I see you. What you do matters. I know at times it feels like you're an underdog and don't have the support you see other artists getting, but never forget that what you do matters and impacts people. I share this win with all of you. Keep walking in obedience to what God asks of you.
Q: Why did you record Chris Tomlin's "Holy Forever"?
I fell in love with the song as soon as Chris first released it. I recognized it was something special. I truly believe it's the kind of song that we were made to sing. It's the song of Heaven and all of eternity. We just get to join in on earth with the worship that is already happening around the throne 24/7.
I make a lot of music for kids and families. I love leading them in "Holy Forever". It's a song that our spirits connect with. It has nothing to do with age. It has everything to do with the worship we were made to give. It's a special song. (https://sc.lnk.to/R1UNDk)
Q: This isn't your first Dove Award win. Tell us about the time you won your first award.
Goodness, that's pretty fun to hear you say that. Winning my first Dove in 2021 was incredible! I was completely prepared not to win. Watching actors on TV when they would say "they were honored to be nominated" I always thought was insincere. Thinking of course that they WANTED to win that Oscar or whatever.
But, once I was nominated, I realized, it really is such an honor to be nominated. The project I won for was "Ready Set Go" and it had been a multi-year journey of obedience and faith for me. I'm not the same person, artist or even Christian I was before that project. It changed my life. When to my surprise I won, it felt like God throwing confetti down from Heaven to say "You did the thing I told you to do. Now, let me give you something that is a buried dream in your heart." Winning a Dove was my teenage musical dream for myself. No doubt, it was a sweet gift from God to receive such an honor all these years later on my journey.
Q: I believe you have a new Christmas single coming out. Tell us more about this release.
Yes! November 1st "Go Tell It (On the Mountain)" comes out. I LOVE Christmas music and always have fun recording Christmas music. Last year, my son was really drawn to "Go Tell It On the Mountain". I noticed that and knew that it would be the next Christmas song I'd record. It's pretty full circle for me because when I was a kid I sang "Go Tell It On the Mountain" on my local Christian TV station one Christmas. I was probably eight or nine years old. I can picture me in my corduroy dress singing it. I put my personal spin on this new arrangement to make it my own. I really, really love it and can't wait for everyone to add it to their Christmas playlist. (sc.lnk.to/CwgZ7C)
Q: You are also launching a new podcast. What is this podcast about?
I'm launching a podcast for PK's (Preachers' Kids) and ministry kids called "Stained Glass Kids." Stained Glass Kids is a podcast, where through raw, redeemed, broken and honest interviews, we bring light to the darkest parts of our stories as PK's and ministry kids.
There's a lot of things that don't normally get talked about. I've been burdened for this group of people for several years now. God has been preparing me for this my whole life. I can see that now. My Spirit is ready for healing and revival among the Church's very own. You can listen now to my introduction episode at StainedGlassKids.com to hear my heart.
So, whether you've had a parent in ministry past or present, OR if you're a Pastor or on a Church staff currently, you should listen. Pull up a seat and listen to the life-long journey of one PK ready to start a revolution, one conversation at a time.
Q: Regarding other new music, what can fans look forward to?
There will probably be a few new singles in the new year so stay tuned. For now, check out the companion song I got to write for Beth Guckenberger's children's book "The Heart Who Wanted to Sing." It's called "A Better Song." (https://sc.lnk.to/WMH7DV)
