Amal Clooney Criticized for Changing Her Name; Simon Cowell Thanks George Clooney
George Clooney's wife recently updated her profile in her law firm U.K. firm Doughty Street Chambers' website to change her family name, New York Daily News reported.
While some are happy for Amal Clooney, née Alamuddin, some critics reacted negatively on her decision to change her family name.
Seventeen days after marrying George Clooney in Venice, the accomplished lawyer decided to be legally called Mrs. Amal Clooney.
The reactions were mixed.
According to Elle.com colleague Natalie Matthews, "women keeping their maiden names" is not just a rare phenomenon but a decreasing one" making her feel "a twinge of disappointment."
On the other hand, Matthews' colleague Elle relationship columnist E. Jean Carroll wrote, "Jesus, what woman would not take George Clooney's name? I've been married several times. I've never taken a man's name in my life, but I would never tell Amal what to do. I'm a radical, radical feminist, and it doesn't bother me at all."
Similarly, The Knot editor-in-chief Jamie Miles said, "A lot of people adopt it because it's traditional, it's what your mother and your grandmother did."
Unlike Mrs. Amal Clooney, one of the celebrities who chose not to take their husband's family name is the newlywed Angelina Jolie. Although their children use Jolie-Pitt, the wife of "Fury" star Brad Pitt refuses to be called Mrs. Angelina Pitt.
Before dating George Clooney, Amal Clooney made a name for herself as the successful lawyer who represented former Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
As a gift to her husband, Amal Clooney reportedly gave George Clooney Murano cocktail glasses, silk napkins and handcrafted napkin holders worth approximately $4,000.
Every time George Clooney looks at the gifts during their wedding, he admired them.
"They didn't have time to go shopping in Venice, so she's ordered them in as a post-wedding gift for him," a source told E! News.
Meanwhile, the "X Factor" judge Simon Cowell recently thanked George Clooney for marrying Amal Clooney, née Alamuddin, because that left him as the "only iconic bachelor left in the entire world."
"I've never said no to marriage, but then again I couldn't imagine having a kid at one point and now look at me," Cowell told Hello! magazine.
