Independence Day 2 Latest News and Release Date: Back to Back Filming of ID Forever Part 1 and 2 Plus Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman To Reprise Roles; What About Will Smith?

Independence Day 2 will be shown in two parts. They will be titled ID Forever Part I and ID Forever Part II. According to director and co-writer Roland Emmerich, they will be filmed back-to-back. The 20th Century Fox has already announced that ID Forever Part I is set for theater showing on July 1, 2016, almost exactly twenty years following the release of the original Independence Day movie.

Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin, who also acts as producer, have already finished writing the scripts for the two sequels. In an interview last year with Entertainment Weekly, Emmerich revealed that the Independence Day sequel movies will take off twenty years following the liberation of earth from the first wave of alien invaders. This time another wave of alien forces is poised to attack. "The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through the wormholes," said the director. The script for the first sequel has already been turned over to Carter Blanchard for polishing and rewriting as part of the pre-production process. Asked about the plots of the sequels, Emmerich revealed that "the first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one, they free themselves again." According to the Independence Day sequel IMDB production notes, the scripts for the films are currently still at the rewrite stage.

Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman have confirmed that they will be returning to reprise the characters they played in Independence Day. However, 'Capt. Hiller' won't be seen in ID Forever I and II because Will Smith declined the role which first established his name as a bankable movie star. According to The Wrap, actor Michael B. Jordan is being eyed for a major role in the Independence Day sequel.
