'CHiPS' Movie Remake Coming Starring Dax Shepard and Michael Pena From Warner Bros.
The popular NBC series, CHiPS, that ran from 1977-1983 is getting a facelift.
Actor Dax Sheperd will write, star and direct a film version of the NBC TV series. Shepard will play Jon Baker, the by-the-book officer played by Larry Wilcox in the original TV series. Michael Pena will co-star and play Frank "Ponch" Poncherello, Baker's wild partner, who was played by Erik Estrada in the series.
Shepard production company Primate Pictures will be producing the California Highway Patrol movie along with Andrew Panay. CHiPS TV series creator Rick Rosner will executive produc, and Jesse Ehrman and Nik Mavinkurve will oversee for Warner Bros.
CHiPS ran for 139 episodes over six seasons from 1977 to 1983. Estrada recently reprised his role in a Super Bowl ad for Radio Shack earlier this year.
Hollywood has rumoring a CHiPs movie for nearly a full decade, but now that Dax Shepard is on board, the movie looks to have real direction.
That '70's Show actor Wilmer Valderrama was first to be rumored to play Ponch in a CHiPs movie back in 2004, when classic shows like Starsky and Hutch and The Dukes of Hazzard were doing well at the box office. Chris Evans was also rumored for the role of Baker, the movie never got made.
Shepard is best known for his work in the feature films Employee of the Month (2006), Without a Paddle (2004), Let's Go to Prison (2006), and Hit and Run (2012), the latter of which he also wrote and directed, and the MTV practical joke reality series Punk'd (2003). As of 2010, he portrays the character of Crosby Braverman in the NBC comedy-drama series Parenthood.
Shepard directed the 2010 comedy Brother's Justice with David Palmer, and the two filmmakers teamed up again in 2012 for the feature Hit and Run (which co-starred Shepard's wife, Kristen Bell).
