Coby James Shares Why He Has Decided to Revive Mary Mary's Hit "Shackles (Praise You)"
Twenty-year-old singer, songwriter and guitarist Coby James releases his new single "Shackles (Praise You)" to radio today. The song finds James collaborating with Evvie McKinney as they pay tribute to Mary Mary. "Shackles (Praise You)" is the debut single by gospel singer-songwriter duo Mary Mary, released on March 7, 2000. It is considered the group's signature song.
"Shackles" became a top-10 hit in several countries around the world, including Australia, Denmark, Iceland, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom, and it charted well in other major music markets. Mary Mary later shot a music video for the song. A sample of this song was featured on Stormzy's song titled "Rainfall", which was a part of his 2019 album Heavy Is the Head.
James explains why he and McKinney have decided to re-cut this hit. "'Shackles (Praise You)' is such a killer song, and I am excited to introduce it to my generation! Most of us weren't even born when the original came out," chuckles James. "Even cooler that I get to sing a Mary Mary song with Evvie during 'Women's History Month.' I'm hoping that music fans think our cover is a worthy tribute to the original."
