Remembering Whitney Houston 10 Years After Her Death
Ten years ago on this day February 11th, the world lost "The Voice." Whitney Houston, arguably the most awarded singer on this globe, passed away. Houston was found unconscious in Suite 434 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, submerged in the bathtub. Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. PST that afternoon. Houston's death has been attributed to drowning caused by heart failure.
Houston's contribution to Gospel music is undeniable. Here's a throwback to a few of Houston's best Gospel oriented songs:
1. I Look to You
The title track to her triumphant comeback 2009 album I Look to You. The song is testimonial to Houston's faith as she sings about looking to her Savior in times when "I'm lost without a cause. After giving it my all."
2. I Love the Lord
"I Love the Lord" was recorded by Whitney Houston as the closing song of the 1996 movie, The Preacher's Wife. The original soundtrack album is the best-selling gospel album of all time and remained number one on Billboard's Top Gospel Albums Chart for twenty-six weeks.
3. His Eye is on the Sparrow
Whitney Houston recorded a version of this hymn for the soundtrack of the 2012 remake of the 1976 musical film Sparkle. RCA Records released the song as the second single from the album on June 8, 2012, four months after Houston's death. This version is Houston's last original single.
4. Jesus Loves Me
Houston teamed up with Gospel music icon BeBe Winans to record "Jesus loves Me." Taken from 1992's The Bodyguard, the soundtrack is the best-selling soundtrack album of all-time, as well as the best selling album by a woman in music history, and the best selling album of the decade. It is also the last song Houston ever performed live in public.
5. Count on Me (with CeCe Winans)
A heartwarming ballad about leaning on a friend for support when needed, "Count on Me" was the fourth single from the soundtrack album of the motion picture Waiting to Exhale, and the second single by Houston released from that album and its soundtrack. "Count on Me" became Winans's highest-charting single on the US Hot 100, peaking at #8.
