Donald Sterling Agrees to Sell the Clippers, Drops Lawsuit Against NBA
Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, after making waves through his lawyer last week that he would fight his ban and sue the NBA, has had a change of heart. Sterling has reportedly agreed to sell the embattled NBA franchise to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for the astounding price of $2 billion. Sterlings attorney confirmed the deal to the Associated Press.
The attorney said that Sterling "has made an agreement with the NBA to resolve all their differences" and he has approved the deal that his wife Shelly negotiated to sell the team.
Sterling was threatening last week to sue the NBA for $1 billion, alleging that his constitutional rights were violated by relying on information from an "illegal" recording that publicized his racist remarks. The suit will be dismissed. There have been stories circulating around the NBA for years about Sterlings racist remarks and behaviors but the audio tape brought everything to a head for many people.
Sterling bought the L.A. Clippers back in the 1980's for just over $200 million. So, while being banned from the NBA, he will make a staggering profit from his time with the NBA franchise. For most of this time as owner, the Clippers were one of the laughing stocks of the league. They have only in the last few years become relevant again with the emergence of stars like Blake Griffin and Chris Paul. Also acquiring coach Doc Rivers from the Boston Celtics has made the Clippers a yearly contender in many people's eyes for the NBA championship as long as they keep the core roster together.
