INTERVIEW: Chased By Giants Shares on Debut Album Releasing Summer 2014
Chased By Giants is a pop/rock band from Nashville, TN. They formed in 2009, originally going by the name Adeline, which they released an EP titled, The Black and White EP. They changed their name to Chased By Giants in 2013 and have finished up recording their first full length album, The Pursuit, which will release this Summer. You can check out more about Chased By Giants at their official website HERE.
We would like to thank Joseph (lead vocals/guitar) for taking the time to speak with us.
Hallels: How close is your debut full length album to being completed and released to the public?
CBG: "We plan to release our debut full length album (The Pursuit) digitally on Tuesday, June 3rd with physical copies to follow."
Hallels: Tell us the story behind your song, "Tonight"?
CBG: "The song "Tonight" was written about a family that was torn apart by divorce. It also mirrors a breakup of a long-time relationship between two teens. The characters in the song go through dark times as life changes overnight for them and it seems as though they have no one to turn to. The children in the divorcing family are scared and confused as their parents yell at one another from overhead. They're caught up in the middle of an argument they didn't start and are too scared to intervene. This is the story that a friend shared with me about some of their close relatives. On the flip side of the story, a boy dates a girl for a real long time, is fully devoted to her, makes future plans for the two of them, and then out of the clear blue, she breaks up with him and wants nothing to do with him. He is totally devastated and doesn't know where to turn for answers. He soon finds himself on his knees begging God this not be (identity remains anonymous). The Chorus of the song displays God's love for the hurt and broken-hearted. He wants us to trust in Him and to love Him first, and everything will fall into its rightful place. He is with us through all of life's ups and downs and He can see the whole picture of life, most of which we can't see. God is our heavenly "Father" which is a label that is dropped from our list of what God is to us so many times. We forget that He loves us more than any earthly father could ever love us. The song says "I am here, listen My son, no more hiding, no more crying tonight." God is here with us and He loves us unconditionally. He longs to be a part of our lives, to share in the good times and in the bad. He wants to hold us in His arms when we don't know where to turn and to dry up our tears when we are broken and beat up. God is love and God is real. He will never leave us nor forsake us."
Hallels: How has this writing/recording process been different as compared to your first EP release (under former name Adeline)?
CBG: "The writing of many of these songs came during and after the recording of our first EP under the name Adeline. They are a bit more mature and focused in the subject matter of each song. The recording process was much different than before. We recorded our instrument tracks at the Brown Owl studio in Nashville, TN. The vocal and guitar overdubs were all recorded at my house (Darkangelo). The mixes were sent out to Ursa Major Sound for mixing and mastering. The Adeline EP was all done by Page Lynch, a friend of ours from Murfreesboro, TN who offered to do the job for us for next to nothing. So, the whole process has been much different this time around as much more people and places have been involved in the process."
Hallels: How would you describe your sound for people that haven't heard of you guys and what artists have influenced your sound?
CBG: "Our sound is a cross between pop-rock and punk rock with some heavy breakdowns thrown in for good measure. We've been told by multiple sources that we sound like Box Car Racer and Angels and Airwaves, which is no surprise to us as we all grew up listing to Blink-182. Much of our influences would be Releint K, Paramore, Yellowcard, The Almost, Emery, All Time Low, and many others."
Hallels: What is the hardest thing about being a independent band trying to break into a full-time career?
CBG: "The hardest thing would have to be time and money. We all work regular jobs to pay bills. Some of us are still in college full time and work part time. We also are very active with our Church and its related activities. All of these take time and commitment. Being in a band is also expensive. Gear is not cheap. Gas is not cheap. Merch is not cheap. This album is costing us thousands upon thousands of dollars to complete. Everything we do outside of practice always seems to include some kind of cost of which we hardly ever recoup from. It can be a struggle at times for us to balance our lives around music and the band but we, by the grace of God have managed to stick together and continue on this journey God has laid out for us."
Hallels: What advice would you give to up and coming Christian bands?
CBG: "The advice I have for new bands and artists would to be patient. There is a 99.99% chance that the industry and the dreams you have about it won't just fall into your lap as planned. You must work well with others, have great people skills, and in the words of a great professor of mine, "You must be present to win" (Frank Baird)."
Hallels: If you could collaborate with one Secular Artist and one Christian Artist, who would you choose?
CBG: "The secular band we all would choose would be Yellowcard and the Christian band would have to be Relient K. Both of these bands have had a great influence on us musically growing up and I think it has always been a goal for us to gig with them some day."
Hallels: Do you have a current scripture that has been speaking to you? Or a good book you are reading?
CBG: "One of the tracks on the new album "Line of Separation" comes right out of Romans 8:38-39 which says (paraphrasing) that nothing could ever come between you and God. Nothing could ever separate us from His love. We think many times that the shameful things we do in life separate us from God and that He could never love us again because of these sins. But God defeated sin when He rose from the grave, giving salvation to all who will freely accept it. Our sin can't keep us from Christ. Nothing can separate us from the love we have in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Hallels: If you guys could each play professionally for any sports team for one day, who would you guys pick?
CBG: "We would all agree on the Nashville Predators."
Hallels: What are your touring plans for rest of 2014?
CBG: "We plan to grab as many local and regional gigs as we can. We don't have any tours planned but are keeping an open mind toward going on the road."
