“Gateway Worship Voices: Thomas Miller” Album Review
Prime Cuts: Praise Him, Glorify You Alone, Be Lifted Higher
Whether or not we have heard of Gateway Worship, many of us have sung their songs over the last decade or so. Songs such as "O The Blood," "Revelation Song," "O Come Thou Fount, Come Thou King" have given us the vocabularies and the soundtracks we have had used in our worship services. Now thanks to Integrity Music, Gateway Worship Voices: Thomas Miller garners 10 of the worship team's most popular worship songs led by Gateway Church's Executive Senior Pastor Thomas Miller. Each Sunday, Gateway Church houses 35,000-plus attendees along with thousands more who particpate in their online services. And over these years, the church's worship team have contributed numerous songs that rank within the top most-used songs in churches around the world according to CCLI (Christian Copyright Licensing International).
Earlier in the year, Integrity Music has released a similar package for another Gateway Worship's leader Kari Jobe. Now, it's Thomas Miller's turn. While Jobe has a knack to tackle the quieter and slower offerings of the team's repertoire, Miller demonstrates more versatility when it comes to song choices. Whether it is on the burners or the ballads, Miller shows mastery. The set begins with a triad of beefy worship anthems that come equipped with burly electric guitar riffs and pounding drums. "Be Lifted Higher" is one of those sure-fire worship that ought to ignite the passion of our worship from the get-go. It's upbeat, spirit-lifting, Christ-exalting and so contagiously worshipful. The same can be said "The Lord Reigns" and the electrifyingly catchy "Praise Him."
Most rewarding about Gateway Worship is that their music is accommodating to those in the old as well as those in the newer schools of worship music. "Come Thou Fount, Come Thou King," for example, takes the old hymn and parlays it with zinging electric guitar riffs making the sound resound with affability to both camps. "New Doxology" is another stellar example of breathing new life to the old sonic chestnuts of the church. Despite being one of the best songs out there that celebrates the resurrection of Christ, "Victorious" faults on being over-produced.
Nevertheless, the gem on this record has to be "Glorify You Alone." Withholding nothing back but presenting God in his full splendour via the Psalm 24-inspired words, Miller ushers in the glory of God in its full array. This is the type of worship that breeds miracles and eradicates fear. In short, there are no wasted moments with Gateway Worship Voices: Thomas Miller, every second of this record is soaked in the presence and power of God.
