Google's Nexus Player Release Date, Specs: Will It Make Chromecast Obsolete?
Google's Nexus Player, which was unveiled recently along with new Nexus 6 smartphone, the Nexus 9 tablet, and the Android 5.0 Lollipop mobile OS, is now available for pre-order at the Nexus Player Play Store for $99 and is set to hit shops by November 3. An optional wireless Nexus Player Gamepad with 2 analog sticks, a 4-button D-pad, and 8 action buttons can be separately pre-purchased for $39.
The Nexus Player was built by Asus and runs on Google's new Android TV platform, offering access to music, movies and TV shows, as well as select Android games at the Google Play store. The optional controller allows users to play video games on TV. The 120mm x 120mm x 20mm puck-shaped device can be plugged into the TV via HDMI. It is designed exclusively to stream and download video, music and games from both the internet and your own home network such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video, YouTube, and Vevo. Eventually, it will also be rendered compatible to work with a number of Android apps in the Google Play store. It comes with 8GB of internal storage for storing downloads.
Google's first Android TV streaming set-top box also has a built-in microphone for voice-controlled remote, an 802.11ac WiFi and is powered by an 1.8GHz Quad Core Intel Atom chip. With its 802.11ac 2x2 (MIMO) chip, internet connection comes at top speed. Two AA batteries are included in the remote control, which connects to the Nexus Player itself using a Bluetooth, version 4.1. The device ships with a quick start guide and a power adapter. Google will also supply those who purchase the Nexus Player with a mix of recommended movies to download, apps to try, games to play which can be placed as icons on the TV home-screen. It has all the functionality of Google's Chromecast, its other media streamer, and more. The Nexus Player automatically syncs with a user's other Android devices so a movie or game started on TV can be continued on a Tablet or smartphone later.
