De Blasio and Giuliani: De Blasio Will Not Object Against 'The Death of Klinghoffer'
Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City is one of the politicians who will not be objecting against “The Death of Klinghoffer,” according to the New York Observer.
De Blasio had blasted Rudolph Giuliani for leading the protest against “The Death of Klinghoffer”. In one of the distinct press conference in Queens, De Blasio stated that Giuliani, had a record of protesting against cultural institutions when he finds their content disagreeable. De Blasio believes it was an American means to value the freedom of speech.
“The Death of Klinghoffer” is an opera starring the real life story of Jewish being murdered by Palestinian terrorists. Although Mayor De Blasio admits that he have not watched the film, he disagreed with the idea of protesting against the opera as a means of showing desolation on anti-Semitism.
There were critics on the opera who said that it covered up the killers of Klinghoffer, the New York Post reported.
De Blasio stated that he does not want to conclude anything from the opera which he haven’t seen yet. He also added that the world has a major problem nowadays that does not correlate with the said opera. He also added that the anti-Semitism problem really exists, especially in Western Europe that greatly worries him and that’s where the Mayor wanted to focus
When Giuliani was the Mayor, he started a warfare against the Brooklyn Museum for presenting an exhibit of Virgin Mary partly sheltered with elephant shit. He called the exhibit “sick”, he was broadly disparaged when he threatened to remove funding from the City Hall for Brooklyn Museum.
Some elected officials like Congressman Eliot Engel, David Paterson and George Pataki, both previous governors have condemned the opera. Mayor de Blasio is the only famous New York official to criticize politicians protesting against “The Death of Klighoffer”, which premiered last Oct. 20, Monday, at the Metropolitan Opera.
Mayor De Blasio also warned of attempting to edit the opera that protesting officials find disagreeable.
The Mayor added that people in a free society should be careful and respect the cultural institutions for whatever artworks they show in operas and art exhibits. He said the only thing he was sure about is that Metropolitan House has the right to present the opera.
