Netflix is quickly becoming the home of original programming. With a whole lot of new ventures including a four movie deal with Adam Sandler and the release of their first movie next year they are becoming the new definition for trailblazer. One of their shows that is doing quite well is Lilyhammer. The show which premiered on 25th January 2012 is now facing a third season premiere in December 2014. Lilyhammer is doing particularly well in Norway where it is set, with viewership getting as high as a fifth of Norway's population. Netflix also holds the show dear because it was their first original content show.
Lilyhammer is about a fictional mobster who is sent to a town in Norway called Lillehammer as part of the witness protection program after testifying against the new mob boss who had a hit out on him. He disposes of a wolf mob style, opens a nightclub and gets a local gang to supply the club with alcohol and gets the teacher pregnant to boot. His ways do not go unnoticed however and mob comes to Lillehammer to seek him out. The second season is no less exciting with Johnny settling in the town well enough to be voted citizen of the year while his crime empire grows exponentially and he gets a new love interest; his twin's teacher. Back in New York the mob still wants a piece of Johnny. The third season will no doubt see the return of the mob as Johnny struggles to bring up his family.
Steven Van Zandt plays Johnny in the series. Van Zandt is a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. Balancing his filming and tour schedule has been a nightmare but he has somehow made it work. Van Zandt also played Silvio Dante in the Soprano's .
