"Gracepoint" TV Series Premiere, Review, Recap: Who killed Danny Solano?
New TV series 'Gracepoint' will have to do better. Predictable story, foreseeable scenes and dialogues are just some of the things fans noticed in the first episode. 'Gracepoint' is the US version of UK's Broadchurch. A demo rating of 1.6 for the first episode is quite alarming. Something must happen and fast!
So what's up with episode one? To give you a gist: Tough detective Emmett Carver (David Tennant) is new in the community. His partner Ellie Miller (Anna Dunne) doesn't really accept him with open arms simply because, while she was on a family vacation, someone - by that we mean Carver - 'stole' her promotion. Ouch! So, anyways, they meet and had some small talk. Then here comes the news - a kid, Danny Solano (Nikolas Filipovic), is found dead! Miller and Carver start the investigation. Who killed the boy? Let's have some suspects:
Suspect Number One - Mark Solano (Michael Pena) the father. With the way he reacted when he saw his dead son, it's easy to say it's him! His wife Beth (Virginia Kull) even doubted his answer about his whereabouts.
Suspect Number Two - Tom (Jack Irvine) the best friend. Tom is also the eldest son of Ellie. Tom upon knowing about the death of Danny starts deleting text messages and emails or data from his cell phone and computer. The question is - will Ellie let the cops interrogate the boy?
So, we have two suspects from the first episode.
In the meantime, other characters also came into play in the first episode. We have Owen Burke (Kevin Zegers), 'Gracepoint' Journal reporter. Owen is also the nephew of Ellie. He will do anything to get career advancement. Owen is also intrigue with Renee Clemons (Jessica Lucas), a reporter of the San Francisco Globe. Is Clemons trying to out-scoop Burke? Media angle is now in place. We just might see a media-police 'tango' in the next few episodes.
The first episode did well in establishing suspects and introducing some secondary characters - now what? Viewers just have to watch the next episode. Hope and pray the next one would be more gripping than the first. With the last statement of Detective Carver - "We will catch whoever did this"- is a promising start.
