Chris Rock's ‘Top Five' Shines at the TIFF, Paramount Heads Bidding for the Film
Chris Rock, the famed comedian, actor; and also a screenwriter, TV and film producer, and director truly shines at the recent Toronto International Film Festival at its Saturday premiere of his third directorial film effort called, "Top Five." It was screened for the first time via the Special Presentations section of the film festival.
Aside from directing the film, Rock was also behind the film's screenplay and also stars in the film; along with co-stars Gabrielle Union, Rosario Dawson who was present at the premiere, Genevieve Angelson, Rachel Feinstein and Hayley Marie Norman.
The film tackles the story of a popular comedian named Andre Allen, played by Rock who decides he wants to be a serious actor. However, it's not just himself that he should convince if he can make it as a serious actor. He first tries with the Haitian revolution drama "Uprize," but it seems that his fans don't want to see him in serious roles and just want to be funny; which is what he does best. On one hand, the biggest media event of the year is himself and his television wedding to beautiful and popular reality star Erica Long (Gabrielle Union). He also meets a young jounarlist Chelsea Brown (Rosario Dawson) who is assigned to interview him for a magazine.
The film also features cameo appearances from JB Smoove, Kevin Hart, Cedric the Entertainer, Jerry Seinfeld and rapper DMX. According to Rock, he shares some similarity with his character but it's not exactly him.
In the meantime, the film is looking for distribution. Reports from Deadline and Hollywood Reporter say that Relativity Media, Open Road Films, A24, Fox Searchlight, Sony, CBS Films, Lionsgate and Paramount are among the bidders for "Top Five."
