Colossus is a Christian metal band made up of four members - Alex Gutzmer on vocals, Jim Hughes on guitar, Zach Moll on bass and Israel Wipf on drums. They combine the typical aspects of metal - murderous guitars and blindingly fast drums, with a deep roar from Gutzmer, making sounds similar to the biggest names in mainstream metal.
"A lot of people call us heavy," Wipf said. "They're like, 'You're not metal - you're just heavy.' But it has a lot more to do with the hearts and motives behind the people playing the instruments, and what you put into the lyrics and the meanings behind the songs." All members of the band are devout Christians who want to give glory to God through what they love to do. "We're all Christian guys just trying to glorify God and spread his gospel through what we do best," Moll said.
"Badlands" combines the ambition and spirit of the band's debut with their progressive hardcore aesthetic and an ambience relatively new to their sound. "Badlands," a term for dry terrain that has been stripped bare by wind and water, is an album full of energetic anthems designed to identify with the struggles of the human condition; namely loneliness, and the feelings of isolation that can be so difficult to navigate. The title also pays homage to Colossus' home state of South Dakota and its vast badlands formations where the harsh erosion and desolation of the ground can often give way to a spectacular color display. The irony of he beauty found in the treacherous terrain isn't lost on Colossus as the theme of finding encouragement in tragedy is one that is at the forefront of "Badlands."
