Elias Dummer Shares the Heartwarming Story Behind "1914 (Christmas Truce)"
Singer and songwriter Elias Dummer has released his brand new Christmas single "1914 (Christmas Truce)." Dummer takes the time to tell the story behind the song:
"Years ago I heard about a true and nearly unbelievable event that happened in the First World War, a story sometimes referred to as the "Christmas Truce". All across the front lines, British and German soldiers agreed to an informal (and discouraged by their commanders) armistice, one that in many cases led them to gather in the middle of no-man's land, sharing stories and gifts from back home. They rose above the ugliness of the moment to remember, side-by-side, that they were in fact all human.
Yes, this story is 100% true -- not a Hallmark movie.
Even in the midst of one of history's most brutal wars, something in us humans knows that the arrival of Christ heralds a new way of being, a new way of living in the world. It's something we believers often struggle to keep in view, but it's essential. For years before, angels spoke to a terrified group of shepherds: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill towards men (Luke 2).
If we Christians are going to sing anything this Advent and Christmas season, perhaps it should be along those lines, too. I for one will sing that song, and pray a prayer I've found myself coming back to all year:"
