Guy Penrod Talks About His Dad and His Upcoming Father's Day Concert
Guy Penrod, one of Gospel Music's most awarded and best-loved vocalists, will be bringing his signature live performance experience to viewers around the globe June 21 as his "Concert On The Couch-A Father's Day Celebration From Franklin Theatre" premiers for one-time online viewing at 7:00 pm Eastern Time. Virtual doors will open at 6:00 pm Eastern Time with special pre-show content.
Filmed recently at the historic Franklin Theatre outside Nashville, Penrod's "Concert On The Couch" is being made available in partnership with Thrive Media Streaming. Exclusive online viewing passes, available for a suggested donation of $5, can be reserved by registering at guypenrod.com.
Featuring an all-star band, Penrod's "Concert On The Couch" will include many classic songs of faith, including "Nothing But The Blood," "I Surrender All" and "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms." In addition, Penrod will revisit such concert favorites as "Pray About Everything" and "The Baptism of Jesse Taylor," among others.
Q: Guy, thanks for doing this interview with us. Tell us a little about "Concert on the Couch" -- what inspired you to put up this special virtual concert on Father's Day?
Because of the COVID-19 health crisis it's been so long since we've been able to play concerts, so I am very glad to partner with our friends at Thrive Media Streaming to present this concert for the entire world. And Father's Day seemed like a fitting occasion because I am a father of eight fabulous children- seven sons and one daughter.
Q: Why did you choose the historic Franklin Theatre for this concert?
We chose the Franklin Theatre because of its rich roots in music and its beautiful setting. It has played host to many country, rock n' roll and Gospel legends that I've listened to throughout my life. Plus, it's close to home for me.
Q: Give us a preview of some of the songs that will be featured in this virtual concert?
We'll be doing songs like "Pray About Everything," "By and By," "When the Morning Comes," Build An Ark," "The Baptism of Jesse Taylor," "Leaning on The Everlasting Arms," and "You Reign," along with many others.
Q: Since this will be happening on Father's Day, tell us a little about your own dad.
My Dad was a wonderful man. He passed in 1994. He had the kindest smile, and you saw his smile before you saw his face. He loved The Lord and was a pastor and soul winner. He loved sharing the love of Jesus with everyone he came into contact with.
Dad was the youngest of 12 children and his father died when he was only 12, so he had to figure fathering out as he went-but really, that's what we all do, right? Not only was he a great father but he was a loving husband, and that speaks volumes to children. He was a kind soul that never met a stranger. In essence, he was someone I aspire to be like.
Q: What is your favorite memory with your dad?
I have so many, but I have particularly fond memories of the numerous times we played golf together. He loved golf and it was a great time to play and talk together.
Q: How can fans "attend" this concert? And what's the cost of "attending"?
They can go to guypenrod.com or concertonthecouch.com to reserve their "online viewing pass." There is no charge for attending the livestream, but tax-deductible donations are encouraged and appreciated. We know it has been a hard time in the world with everything being shut down, so we wanted to make the concert available to everyone, even if they are unable to pay.
Q: What words of encouragement do you have for our readers in this pandemic?
Please know that our Heavenly Father loves you and is with you and for you. He even "likes" you! Remember in His Word He tells us that by His stripes we "are" healed, and that He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind. Speak protection in Jesus' name over all of your loved ones and believe that when you do, it is done!
Let the peace, love and grace of Jesus reign in your lives and thank Him for His "complete" and "finished" work on the cross. Move forward in His strength and power, in Jesus' name. Hallelujah. Amen!
