Mosaic MSC's Brooke Figueroa Speaks About Making "HUMAN" Accessible, Relatable and Beautiful
Mosaic MSC make their Capitol CMG debut with their fourth album HUMAN available now. This live recording is their first since 2016's Glory & Wonder and features all new original songs previously only heard at Mosaic, the Los Angeles-based church where the group was formed.
Human is an eight-track album that embodies the heartbeat of humanity through music and performance and was recorded over the course of two nights in Hollywood, CA. The production presents a representation of the diverse artistic community with rotating vocalists, a 6-piece band, 40-person choir, and an audience of a thousand all from different cultural and social backgrounds.
We are honored to talk to Mosaic MSC's Brooke Figueroa for this exclusive interview.
Q: Thanks so much for doing this interview with us. It's been almost 4 years since the release of "Glory and Wonder." How have the team grown spiritually and musically over these years?
Thank you for having us! In the years since Glory and Wonder we released two studio EPs - Unknown and Heaven - and you can hear how we've grown as a band through both the storytelling and production arcs of the music. We always try to risk more and challenge ourselves with each new project. Spiritually, band members have gotten engaged, married, had kids, taken on new job roles, or more pastoral responsibility - we've all matured in our relationships with Jesus and grown up in a lot of ways individually and together.
Q: Your song "Tremble" has become a big hit. "Tremble" spent 33 weeks on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart and has received over 100 million streams across digital platforms. How did the song come about? Did you expect it to be such a big hit?
We wrote the song in Tennessee with a couple of our friends - we were really pleasantly surprised at the song's reception. More than its success, what means the most to us are the stories we're sent of how the song has helped people through dark or fearful times in their lives. It's been a privilege to be a part of people's stories.
Q: You have a new record coming out entitled "HUMAN." Why did you decide to call the album "HUMAN"?
We wanted to make music that felt human - accessible, relatable, understandable, beautiful. Music for people who believe in God and for those who are still figuring it all out.
Q: What does it mean to be human? And how do the songs reflect this understanding of being human?
Well, that's a huge question, haha. Humans were created in the image of God - created by God for joy and purpose and experiencing the wonder He created in the world. We asked - what does it look like to discuss both sides of the human experience - our doubts and faithfulness - as honestly as possible?
Q: What were some of the highlights in making this record?
Writing together as a group in the mountains. Taking time just to listen to God and translate that into music. Recording this record with thousands of people at our church - that's a very treasured memory, especially now.
Q: "Fountain (I Am Good)" the new album's lead single has already received half a million streams. Tell us more about this song and its genesis.
We're so happy it's connecting with people! The song is an affirmation of God's love for us - it's a catharsis for so many people when they hear it. Being a Christian shouldn't make your life riddled with guilt or despair that you're innately a bad person who is just trying to be good every day. God created us good, and we go out in the world and do good. When we draw close to Him, His goodness is revealed in us to the world.
Q: Looking at worship music now, what aspects do you find encouraging and what areas do you think we need to improve on?
There's a new trend of stripped down, communal worship recordings that are so raw and passionate. That new dimension to published music is really refreshing.
Q: In such times of the coronavirus pandemic, what words of hope do you have for our readers?
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
God is the God of hope! Trust brings joy and peace to our minds and spirits; ask the Holy Spirit to give you power and strength to face whatever the day holds and move deeper into hope as you grow.
