Inc.com's "5 Keys to the WWE's Hugely Successful Social Media Strategy"
WWE's social media strategy is successful, hugely so. That strategy has generated 360 million social media followers for the global sports-entertainment company. To find out how they do conduct their social media campaign, Will Yakowicz, a reporter for online magazine Inc., spoke with WWE Chief Brand Officer and occasional professional wrestler Stephanie McMahon. Through his article, "5 Keys to the WWE's Hugely Successful Social Media Strategy," he shares his findings.
Briefly, according to the article, WWE succeeds in meeting its social media objectives because:
- The company actively engages the fans. It does not just send out its message, it also listens and responds to what the public is telling them. As Ms. McMahon noted, "Fans, consumers, and customers appreciate that extra level of personal attention and responsiveness from any brand."
- WWE employees (the company's talents or Superstars) are also on-board when it comes to the execution of their social media strategy. Said Ms. McMahon, "Our talents use their social media accounts to continue to drive the story line and engagement." With the talents, each engaging their own fans, the number of WWE followers "literally grows every single week."
- The company understands the importance of proper timing. They do their homework to find out the particulars of their client base, i.e., when most of them are available on Twitter and Facebook, so that they can time their message or promos accordingly.
- They also will never fight off any campaign against them. Instead, they will embrace that campaign and incorporate that campaign into their own story line, like what they just did with the recent "Hijack Raw" movement instigated by fans who were upset because CM Punk left the company.
- The company always takes good care of its fan base. As Ms. McMahon observed, "When you think about the secret of WWE, it is our fan base. I think if every company looked at their consumers as the secret to their success, they might have more successes."
