Anne Hathaway Copies Emma Stone’s Goodwill Stunt
Last month, June 17, "The Amazing Spider-Man" co-stars and real-life lovers Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield pulled a fast one on the New York City paparazzi who'd been waiting outside the cafe where they were having their breakfast. As they stepped out, Stone held up a card which read: "Good morning! We were eating and saw a group of guys with cameras outside. And so we thought, let's try this again. We don't need the attention, but these wonderful organizations do:" Then Garfield held his own card which continued: "www.youthmentoring.org, www.autismspeaks.org, (and don't forget) www.wwo.org, www.gildasclubnyc.org. Here's to the stuff that matters. Have a great day!"
This Fourth of July, it was Anne Hathaway and her husband Adam Schulman's turn to put the paparazzi's constant hounding to better use. As they were walking their dogs in Brooklyn and as the photographers were about to snap away, they covered their faces with makeshift cardboard signs with handwritten messages to divert the spotlight to their favorite charities. Hathaway's sign reads, "Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield had a great idea! Please check out: www.girleffect.org, www.feedingamerica.org, www.worldofchildren.org." Her husband's sign continued, "Happy 4th of July" with a little drawing of some exploding fireworks.
Stone and Garfield began pulling their goodwill publicity stunts on the paparazzi as early as 2012. But do the organizations mentioned by Stone and company appreciate the gesture? Clearly, yes. Kay Isaacson-Leibowitz of World of Children Award said to Washington Post, "This kind of thing is going to influence a lot of young people as well as help the charities. I hope it's a trend." Ross Fraser of Feeding America added, "It's no accident that we had this huge uptick of people at the same time that Anne Hathaway did this promotion."
