Hillsong's Marty Sampson Clarifies that He Has Not Renounced His Faith But is Close
Days after breaking the news via Intsgram that he has lost his faith, Hillsong's worship leader Marty Sampson has clarified that he has not yet renounced his Christian faith. But he is close. His faith or what's lack thereof is now on "incredibly shaky ground."
Sampson has been attending Hillsong Church in Sydney since he was 16 years-old. In the late 1990s he has featured on the Youth Alive albums and was one of the original Hillsong United band's worship leaders. He often leads worship at the church and has maintained contributions for Hillsong albums.
Over the years, Sampson has written songs for Hillsong Worship including co-writing with Darlene Zschech ("One Thing"), Brooke Ligertwood ("Depths") and Joel Houston ("My Best Friend"). He is best known as the songwriter to such Hillsong favorites such as "Elohim," "His Glory Appears" and "O Praise the Name (Anástasis)."
Speaking to Christian Post, Sampson admits to "struggling with many parts of the belief system that seem so incoherent with common human morality."
"If most of humankind had a choice, would we not rid the world of the scourge of cancer? Or sickness and disease? Why doesn't God do such a thing? Of course there is an answer to this question, but the majority of a typical Christian's life is not spent considering these things," he wrote. "Questions such as these remain in the too hard basket."
"I have and continue to analyze the arguments of prominent Christian apologists and biblical scholars, and am open minded enough to consider the arguments of atheist debaters and debaters from other religions," he continued. "If the truth is true, it will remain so regardless of my understanding of it. If I search it out, surely it will become even more clearly seen as the truth that it is. Examining a diamond more closer reveals the quality of the diamond. As I am still breathing, I am still learning."
