New York Knicks & Derek Fisher Agree to 5-Year $25 Million Deal
The New York Knicks coaching vacancy has been of high interest in the sports world since Phil Jackson came on as team President towards the end of the regular season. Jackson is used to always getting his way in his successful career, so having his first choice of Steve Kerr for coach go south was a surprise to many. Kerr instead chose to take the Golden State Warriors opening after they had let go of first-time head coach, Mark Jackson.
It was very apparent that Phil wanted to pick a coach that he knew personally and had worked with before. He seemingly wants someone that will let him do some coaching from his office as well by his choices.
Among the other candidates for the Knicks job that interested Jackson was Derek Fisher, who won 5 NBA championships under Phil as a member of the Lakers. Fisher played 13 seasons with the Lakers and finished this season (his 18th) with the Thunder.
Today we learn that Derek Fisher has agreed to a five-year, $25 million deal to become coach of the New York Knicks, according to Yahoo Sports. His deal is equal to the five-year, $25 million agreement that Steve Kerr reached with Golden State, but is less of a commitment than what New York initially offered Kerr to become its coach.
Jackson is building the rest of Fisher's coaching staff for the Knicks upcoming season and is expected to include Bill Cartwright and Kurt Rambis. Fisher is expected to run Jackson's famed triangle offense with the Knicks that Fisher learned during his years with the Los Angeles Lakers.
