Disney's 'Maleficent' Starring Angelina Jolie & Elle Fanning Tops Box Office with $70 Million
Disney's new movie Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning, did not disappoint at the box office this weekend. The film topped all movies and grossed over $70 million.
According to THR, this gives Angelina her best box office movie opening to date.
Coming in second place behind Maleficent was the Marvel hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, featuring the star-studded cast of Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, and more, which grossed another $32.6 million this weekend for a domestic total of $162.1 million and counting.
Rounding out the top three was Seth MacFarlane's new comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West came in third with $17.1 million.
Maleficent is a new 'dark' fantasy film directed by Robert Stromberg. Angelina Jolie plays Maleficent and Elle Fanning as Aurora(Sleeping Beauty) in a new look on a Disney classic.
Official Plot: "Maleficent is the untold story of Disney's most iconic villain from the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty. A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal - an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king's successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom - and perhaps to Maleficent's true happiness as well."
Maleficent also stars Sharito Copley, Brenton Thwaites, Juno Temple, Sam Riley, Miranda Richardson, Imelda Staunton and others. The film is written by Paul Dini and Linda Woolverton and produced by Don Hahn and Joe Roth. The film had a budget of $200 million under Walt Disney Studios and Motion Pictures.
