Jordan Smith Crowned the Winner of NBC's The Voice
This year NBC's "The Voice" has kept fans glued to the TV for weeks and weeks. Finally, the season has come to a close last night as a winner has been announced. Adam Levine's Jordan Smith has been crowned the winner of Season 9's "The Voice."
Smith is the fourth consecutive male vocalist to win the NBC's popular singing program. In the finale broadcasted last night, Smith defeats his three other finalists including country singers Emily Ann Roberts, Barrett Baber, as well as pop-soul singer Jeffrey Austin.
Smith was born, Jordan Mackenzie Smith, on November 4, 1993, in Whitley County, Kentucky, to Kelley and Geri Smith (née, Saylor), who are musicians, and they raised him in the church choir at a young age, in the congregation of House of Mercy in the town of Wallins Creek, Kentucky. Smith graduated from Harlan County High School. He had earlier won the Poke Sallet Idol competition at the annual Poke Sallet festival in 2012. He attends Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, where he is a member of the Lee University Campus Choir
The 22-year-old from Kentucky was a hit from the start, wooing the judges with his soaring rendition of Sia's "Chandelier" and surprising them with his sky-scraping range. "Oh my god, you shocked me! You're so amazing!" squealed judge Gwen Stefani after the performance, running from her chair to hug Smith.
But Adam Levine's mentoring, Smith blossomed. Who could forget Smith's rendition of "Great is Thy Faithfulness"? Featuring a piano, Smith's control over his notes and his deeply felt emotions, make his rendition memorable. His rendition of the song, "Great Is Thy Faithfulness", during week two of the live shows, charted on the Billboard magazine charts, where it placed at No. 30 on The Billboard Hot 100 and was No. 1 on the Christian Songs chart for 2 weeks straight.
The Lee University student was never in danger of going home, and always seemed poised for the finale. His performances Monday night were less memorable, but still enough to secure Smith the $100,000 prize and recording contract with Universal Music Group.
A visibly shocked Smith revisited "Climb Every Mountain," from his finale performances, as confetti rained down. He still sounded great.
