Reactions Towards the City Harvest Church and Pastor Kong Hee's Verdict
Kong Hee, the lead and founding pastor of Singapore's megachurch City Harvest Church, has been convicted for misappropriating Sg$24 m of the church funds. The charismatic pastor and five aides spent some of the money on music videos featuring scantily clad dancers to support Hee's wife Sun Ho's singing career in Asia and try to crack the US market.
Such a news has spread like wildfire across social media with many church members, adherents and others voicing their opinions. A prime example of this were the reactions to Sun Ho's letter to the City Harvest congregation about the verdict on Wednesday (21 Oct). While many commenters voiced their support for the singer and the six accused, among whom was her husband Kong Hee, other users left biting comments like "Crocodile tears. All because of you and your so called singing career".
Here's a sample of responses in response to the debacle:
"Please repent and admit your wrong doing, the very least spare a thought for both of your son."
"Core value of God is not greed, for sure. And definitely not getting blessed by giving more. Glad a sad chapter of your Church is finally getting some closure."

"I really hope City Harvest church members won't turn away from God because of their leaders' wrongdoing. The truth is painful, may God heal their heart with love. However, at this moment if you are still trusting those six people of doing nothing wrong, think carefully you are worshipping God or CHC? Put your trust in God, not them. Money should be spending in missionaries, helping poors, instead of a singer who has albums that contain no songs about God, but earthy things. For all other Churches in Singapore, please open doors to those who want to switch from city harvest to another church, or want to talk to other Christians about their delimma. Let's not bias other CHC members because it maybe a tought time for some of them too."
"Kong was a man of God no doubt. I use the past tense because he was someone whom God used to bring many to Christ. No doubt about that. But the desire to please his wife and his own ambition changed all that. The crossover marked the end of Kong as you know him. The web of lies and deceit began to form and spread so quickly and malignantly. People change. That's a sad fact. Those of you who have been blessed, see it as that phase in your lives. Move on."
"God knows your heart and your actions. Be assured that He will judge your works when the Day comes. But I don't believe it will be gold. Your China Wine work is not gold. It is fleshly and self glory. Please don't deceive yourself and the church.Your Geisha is not gold. Please don't sweep all that under a carpet and stand up on stage to "worship" Him. It is not real worship. You know that He will not accept that. You have never admitted your wrongs and you have caused people to face a very long and painful jail time, away from their young children and families. How do you sleep at night? How do you stand up there and say you love Jesus? That's not possible. You are a liar through and through. Your husband is weak and spineless. He seeks fleshly glory like you. Your dream to be a pop star a la J Lo caused all this and you made him concoct this devious plan. Please take a reality check. You really don't know Jesus for who He is. You really don't know what it means to worship Him. You really don't know what it means to follow Him and give Him all the glory. You are after your own glory and how it failed. You know deep in your heart it's your vanity that caused all this. Please stop deceiving yourself and those around you. You are not called nor fit to be a pastor. Stop now before it's too late."
