Google Nexus Player set in upcoming Android TV to rival Apple TV
Looks like Google is giving Apple a run for its money as it unveiled its latest product to the market - the Google Nexus Player, alongside its other Nexus products. Tech reporters are saying that it is Google's reply to Apple's Apple TV where it will be part of the Android Lollipop operating system update.
Google Nexus Player, otherwise known as Android TV, promises the same flexibility and usefulness many of its loyal users are accustomed to in its smart phone counterparts. In short, it will be like an Android phone/tablet on your TV screen.
Users who are fond of streaming videos and movies from Netflix will be able to watch their shows through the Google Nexus Player installed. Nexus Player weighs at about 250 grams and is the size of a hockey puck. It sports a 1.8 GHz quad core Intel Atom chip, a graphics chip for games and can support HD video thanks to its Imagination PowerVR Series 6 GPU. The Nexus Player will also have a storage of 8 GB and a RAM of 1 GB. Users will also be able to connect to the internet.
What's unique is that Google has paired the Nexus Player with an unusual type of remote. What sets this remote apart from other typical remotes is that it is equipped with a microphone for vocal instructions and sports a small touchpad and only four buttons. The device will also come with an optional gamepad to cater to its game-hungry user.
The downside presented by critics about the Android TV is that it may not allow users to use majority of the apps present in their smartphones and tablets. Regardless, it still promises users quality that one could expect from a smart TV.
The Nexus Player is developed by PC brand Asus and will be released to the USA and Canada by the beginning of November.
